Este volumen se propone explorar los fundamentos de la pedagogía jesuita de la primera Edad Moderna, entendida como una filosofía de la educación que, aun teniendo origen en la cultura humanística del Renacimiento europeo, desarrolló rasgos específicos en función de la expansión de las actividades y la presencia de esta orden religiosa en el mundo. Son elementos fundamentales de esta pedagogía: la mirada holística; el ejercicio de la mente, el espíritu y el cuerpo en sus formas académicas y vitales; la formación del carácter; la importancia del lenguaje; el universalismo como resultado de una actitud fundamentalmente adaptativa de los jesuitas a las circunstancias y las diferentes culturas. El principal propósito es subrayar la contribución de algunos de los muchos jesuitas ibéricos a estos aspectos pedagógicos, destacando no solo el impacto cultural individual dentro de la orden religiosa sino también las continuidades y un sustrato común, e hipotetizar una temprana tonalidad hispánica dentro del humanismo jesuita, que luego evolucionó dando sus mejores frutos en el universalismo del siglo XVIII.
