In 2006 I had my first fall, 60 feet straight down, head-first! A 16-inch spike ran straight into my leg, from which I dangled 60 feet in the air. The pain and fear was insane. When I hit the ground I bounced 12 feet. A helicopter took me to Royal Columbia Hospital. I was completely paralyzed with 276 fractures from my neck to my ankles. For my second fall, I fell 42 feet, bounced off two roofs and landed on my back on a metal railing. It hurt right away. I got a month off work. I had three more falls, was electrocuted, had two head-on collisions, was hit by a company truck which smashed my leg into pieces, cut my finger off, almost froze to death twice in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, got ripped apart by a guard dog and had a gun pointed at me by a angry customer. Forty years of breathing in toxic fumes, poisons and asbestos destroyed my lungs, my eyes and my hearing. Airport metal detectors light up all day long, as I’m held together with plates and screws.I live with chronic and severe arthritis and constant pain, but I’m all right. Through all these years of pain and agony, I kept running back to climb that ladder to the trade I loved so much. It cost me two marriages, but I raised five daughters on my own after my wives took off and left the kids with me. I lost millions in contracts from these accidents, and had to fight the pain meds they jammed into me for two years straight, turning me into a junkie. Every accident I had should have taken my life. I lost two women that I loved with all my heart, and if not for my daughters who kept me going I may have taken a different path. I have hundreds of stories that will make you laugh or cry, but when you’re finished reading you’ll say that man is not only the luckiest roofer alive, he’s unbreakable.
