Fairfield is where diverse peoples have settled, often after long journeys from far away. Its Station Street is something of a welcoming home for many, a casual, happy village. A charming railway station, a giant wooden dog called Fido and numerous independent shops give it an easy air. The combination of angle parking and parallel parking let people and cars weave without much honking. A market town in its own style, Fairfield has manners without pretention. You can say hello! With scissors and coloured papers, along with some poems, I have sought to create an individual idea of the place - like as if Piet Mondrian had visited. Look around and you too will see patterns and shapes behind the more obvious ones of shop goods and people’s clothes, under an Australian sky.

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

  • Richmond

This book is a tribute to that wonderful artist Rosalie Gascogne. As a child I lived in an old house in Richmond. Rogers Street was thin and had painted houses on each side, musty pinks and faded blues were set off by green ferns. My billycart had red wheels, completing the colour wheel under the yellow sun. Many years later I instantly clicked when I saw and purchased art work...

The engineering designer is always limited by the properties of available materials. Some properties are critically affected by variations in com position, in state or in testing conditions, while others are much less so. The engineer must know this if he is to make intelligent use of the data on properties of materials that he finds in handbooks and...
