The most emotionally challenging thing for me over the past eight years actually has been national politics. My deteriorating physical condition has deprived me of most of the typical distractions, so the 'news' has been hard to avoid. The political situation has caused me to reexamine repeatedly and intensely my values, beliefs and feelings. I have tried and tried to understand what has been happening and why. So, I write about losses and losing as a way to cope. As set out in the essays below, I do not blame only Donald Trump and his cronies and puppets. He has done considerable damage but, in some ways, more lasting damage has been done by his opponents in their efforts to disparage him and interfere with his policies. And, of course, many problems preceded and still transcend Trump, et al.

  • The System
    Lincoln Steffens
The 'muckraker' Lincoln Steffens dug deep into business criminality and political corruption in a powerful series of articles written for McClure's magazine. Establishment newspapers and 'System' politicians dismissed his work as just another example of the decrepit modern journalism that could never pass for genuine writing. But Steffens' dogged quest for truth and justice set...

The digital turn might as well be marked as an Asian turn. From flash-mobs in Taiwan to feminist mobilisations in India, from hybrid media strategies of Syrian activists to cultural protests in Thailand, we see the emergence of political acts that transform the citizen from being a beneficiary of change to becoming an agent of change. In co-shaping these changes, what the digit...

I have become accustomed to expressing myself freely about matters well beyond my expertise but only after trying to inform myself. (One might say that that became my expertise as a lawyer.) But, this is first time that I have gone beyond my comfort zone. Religious beliefs constitute a treacherous area in which to stomp around. I tried to hedge the risks by focusing on an intel...

These essays are on topics reflecting the intersection of science and humankind. They concern time, consciousness, beauty, probability, and understanding.
