Los signos del tiempo familiariza al lector con el panorama político de la primera mitad de la década de 1930, que propició el fin de la Hegemonía Conservadora, a través de las caricaturas del artista antioqueño Ricardo Rendón Bravo (1894-1931) que aparecieron en el periódico El Tiempo durante ese periodo. También lo acerca un poco a la vida, obra y psicología de este enigmático caricaturista antioqueño, quien formó parte de varios círculos de intelectuales jóvenes de principios del siglo XX, para tener la oportunidad de viajar a través de las caricaturas de Rendón a los últimos meses de Gobierno del presidente conservador Miguel Abadía Méndez y de observar cómo se desarrolló la campaña electoral de 1930, mediante la cual se dio fin a un poco menos de medio siglo de presidentes conservadores a cargo del poder ejecutivo.
