El libro aborda una de las regiones escriturales menos difundidas de José Donoso: su escritura referencial, en particular crónicas, ensayos y diarios personales. Será significativo para los lectores apreciar cómo Donoso desactiva las convenciones de la crónica urbana. Sus crónicas están guiadas por el oficio literario que, a partir de la inmediatez del impacto visual, generan un espacio donde la memoria de los afectos y las impresiones acústicas dejan “escuchar” un Santiago “inaudito”. Si bien el foco de atención son los trabajos referenciales, estos se entrelazan complementariamente con su obra narrativa con el fin de explorar la escritura de José Donoso. El trabajo adopta una orientación interdisciplinar donde convergen teorías contemporáneas del paisaje provenientes de la geografía, la historia del arte y la arquitectura. Estos nexos pueden resultar particularmente interesantes para las/los lectoras/es, estudiantes  de educación media y universitaria, e investigadores. A partir de estas articulaciones se discuten las aproximaciones a la ciudad de Santiago con énfasis en paisajes urbanos en constante estado de desplazamiento y transformación. El paisaje deja de estar supeditado a su representación visual, o a su materialidad, y se convierte en un reflejo de la subjetividad en crisis del escritor.  10
