He aquí la principal obra filosófica de Hazlitt, en la que fundamenta una política de propiedad privada y de mercados libres en una ética de utilitarismo clásico, entendida en el sentido en que Mises entendía ese término. Al escribir este libro, Hazlitt recupera una tradición de los siglos XVIII y XIX en la que los economistas escribían no sólo sobre cuestiones estrictamente económicas, sino también sobre la relación entre la economía y el bien de la sociedad en general. Adam Smith escribió un tratado moral porque sabía que muchas objeciones a los mercados tienen su origen en estas preocupaciones. Hazlitt también hace suya la causa, y con resultados espectaculares.Hazlitt es partidario de una ética que busque la felicidad general y el florecimiento de todos a largo plazo. La acción, las instituciones, las normas, los principios, las costumbres, los ideales y todo lo demás se sostiene o cae en función de si permiten a las personas vivir juntas de forma pacífica en beneficio mutuo. En este sentido, es fundamental comprender la afirmación liberal clásica de que los intereses del individuo y los de la sociedad en general no son antagónicos, sino totalmente compatibles y codeterminados.Al defender el 'utilitarismo de las normas', Hazlitt es consciente de que está adoptando una ética que es ampliamente rechazada en nuestro tiempo, incluso por la mayor parte de la tradición liberal. Sin embargo, presenta los argumentos más sólidos posibles y, sin duda, se verá desafiado en cada momento.Además, el estilo de escritura aquí es inigualable. Fue escrito en 1964 después de toda una vida escribiendo y pensando.
