This is a suspenseful, historical fiction account of immigrants who risk their lives and all that they have to immigrate into the United States and begin life anew. Agustín is a teenage boy who desires a better life-a purpose for his own existence. He has the courage to leave his family in the seaside city of Guaymas, Sonora, to seek success and independence in America. But he also wishes to fill the emptiness that resides deep in his soul from a life of loneliness and emotional abandonment. His story is narrated in tandem with Micaela’s family’s push and pull factors that force them to vacate their home along the bajillos of El Fuerte, Sinaloa, and enter the United States illegally to seek a better, more profitable existence. The characters deal with personal and social hardships, racism and discrimination, and the difficulties of making a life for themselves as they set foot in a new country. And it is through their determination and resilience, coupled with their unwavering Catholic faith, that they successfully face the daily ordeals of being illegal immigrants in a foreign land.
