A young American named Julian West falls into a deep, hypnosis-induced sleep in the late 19th century and wakes up 113 years later in the year 2000. He is in the same location (Boston, Massachusetts), but in a totally changed world. While he was sleeping, the United States has been transformed into a socialist utopia. The young man readily finds a guide, Doctor Leete, who shows him around and explains all the advances of this new age.Looking Backward was one of the most commercially successful books published in the United States in the 19th century. Bellamy’s book inspired legions of inspired readers to establish so-called Nationalist Clubs, beginning in Boston late in 1888. By 1891 it was reported that no fewer than 162 Nationalist Clubs were in existence. The novel also inspired several utopian communities. This case laminate collector’s edition includes a Victorian-inspired dust jacket.
