John R. Sabine is now well into his third career: first a scientist and academic, then a business consultant/entrepreneur and now a scholar-at-large (thinker, writer, speaker, actor). His acting lifes include stage, film and television work, especially in his persona as the humorist Old Jack: the Aussie Gleeman (purveyor of tall tales, short stories and pithy poetry). Look out for him coming soon to a site near you. As a thinker/writer, his recent publications include a major travel memoir and two collections of poetry, several short stories and essays and, more recently still, an ongoing series of blogs devoted to issues of current national and international importance, Look Alive is his first collection of short stories – some very short, some not quite so short, some stand-alone, some indicating the beginnings of much larger works. ‘Look alive’ is his life mantra as he matures. Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...

  • On Thinking About It
    John R. Sabine
'John Sabine writes with the authority and gentle humour of experience. As I savoured this collection of his poetry, I felt like a child at the knee of a venerable grandfather, listening, absorbing with wonder the things he was opening my eyes and senses to. Yet I also found myself thinking, 'Oh yes, I know just what you mean...' when he writes of love, children, art and nature...
