The book titled ''The Lives of Eminent Russian Prelates: Nikon Sixth Patriarch of Moscow; Saint Demetrius Metropolitan of Rostoff; Michael Metropolitan of Novgorod and Saint Petersburg'' is a historical account of the lives of four notable Russian clergymen. The author of the book, Reverend R. W. Blackmore, provides a detailed description of the lives and achievements of these eminent Russian prelates. The book is divided into four sections, each dedicated to one of the prelates. The first section is about Nikon, the Sixth Patriarch of Moscow, who played a significant role in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The second section is about Saint Demetrius, the Metropolitan of Rostoff, who was known for his piety and devotion to the Church. The third section is about Michael, the Metropolitan of Novgorod and Saint Petersburg, who was a prominent figure in the Church during the reign of Peter the Great. The final section is about the life and works of Saint Petersburg, who was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church for his contributions to the Church and society. The book provides a fascinating insight into the lives of these four eminent Russian prelates and their contributions to the history of the Russian Orthodox Church.1854. The biographies contained in this volume abound in expressions and allusions which must be but partially, if at all, intelligible to persons unacquainted with the geography, history, and customs of the Russians. The life of Nikon, Sixth Patriarch of Moscow, furnishes the reader with some particulars of Russian history relative to the extinction of the dynasty of Rurik and the election of Michael, son of Philaret; Saint Demetrius, Metropolitan of Rostoff, who from his earliest years was devoted to God and the holy Church, contains much that is calculated to improve and to teach; and Michael, Metropolitan of Novgorod and St. Petersburg whose example is striking and worthy of all imitation: it is that of a man, raised from the very lowest rank of society to the most exalted position in the Church of Christ, and performing the duties of each successive station he filled with singular ability, energy and success. His whole life was devoted to the service of God and the good of his fellow men. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
