L’objectif principal de cet ouvrage est d’étudier comment la théorie de la sémiosphère de Yuri M. Lotman offre un modèle spatial pour l’interprétation de la culture sur laquelle repose la Trilogie du Caire de Naguib Mahfouz. En appliquant la théorie de Lotman à la culture égyptienne, cet ouvrage vise à montrer dans quelle mesure une théorie aussi globalisée peut s’appliquer à une structure spatiale culturellement différente. Il cherche en outre à révéler si la structure spatiale et la bipartition reflètent les thèmes principaux de la trilogie, à savoir les tensions sociales et politiques ainsi que le conflit entre les systèmes de valeurs socioculturelles traditionnels et modernes.
