Gli obiettivi specifici dello studio sono stati quelli di indagare empiricamente il tipo di impatto della spesa pubblica sulla crescita economica, di esaminare le modalità di trasmissione degli shock tra spesa pubblica e crescita economica e di delineare i vincoli che limitano l’efficacia della spesa pubblica e della crescita economica in Nigeria. Questo studio ha utilizzato dati annuali nigeriani per il periodo 1970-2011 per tutte le variabili e sono stati condotti i test di stazionarietà, causalità di Granger, cointegrazione e autocorrelazione. Lo studio ha dimostrato che la spesa pubblica ha un impatto significativo e positivo sulla crescita economica, mentre le importazioni, il risparmio e il tasso di disoccupazione hanno un impatto negativo sulla crescita economica. Anche i proventi del petrolio hanno un impatto positivo ma non significativo sulla crescita economica. Le raccomandazioni dell’autore includono, tra le altre, le seguenti: il governo dovrebbe aumentare i suoi investimenti in attività economiche produttive e dovrebbe diversificare investendo anche in altri settori dell’economia, dato che l’impatto dell’industria petrolifera sulla crescita è risultato insignificante.
