Le sujet de l’alcoolisme lui-même a été bien étudié par les chercheurs au cours des trente dernières années, mais sa consommation ne semble pas diminuer ; en fait, l’abus d’alcool a augmenté de 31,1 % au Brésil au cours des six dernières années (LENAD, 2013). À première vue, la conclusion à laquelle est parvenue l’enquête ne semble pas cohérente avec les nombreuses recherches qui révèlent les effets néfastes de l’alcool sur les individus. Face à cette contradiction, de nombreux chercheurs tentent actuellement de comprendre quels enjeux sociaux et psychologiques peuvent être impliqués dans le développement d’un alcoolique potentiel. Le choix de cette spécification, les relations familiales d’un individu dépendant, est dû à une étude de Chassin, Rogosch & Barrera (1991) qui conclut que les enfants d’alcooliques sont quatre à six fois plus susceptibles que la population générale de développer des problèmes d’abus d’alcool. La série Les Simpson a été choisie pour l’observation parce qu’elle vise à aborder des sujets sérieux tels que l’homosexualité et l’alcoolisme de manière critique, tout en conservant l’humour caractéristique de la série.
