A relação entre estratégias de coping e sintomas psicológicos tem sido estudada há décadas. Desde o trabalho pioneiro de Richard Lazarus, no início dos anos 60, até à atualidade, os investigadores aprenderam muito sobre a forma como os seres humanos lidam com o seu ambiente e como as estratégias de coping que escolhem interagem com a psicopatologia. Este estudo analisa a forma como as pessoas lidam com sintomas obsessivo-compulsivos, de ansiedade social e depressivos, bem como a forma como estes três domínios de sintomas influenciam as estratégias de coping que uma pessoa utiliza. Verificou-se que o aumento da utilização de estratégias de coping categorizadas no fator de coping evitante estava relacionado com o aumento dos sintomas obsessivo-compulsivos, de ansiedade social e depressivos. Verificou-se que os sintomas de ansiedade social diminuíam à medida que aumentava a utilização de estratégias de coping auto-suficientes. A sintomatologia obsessivo-compulsiva e de ansiedade social também se revelou preditiva de estratégias de confronto auto-suficientes. Os resultados deste estudo contribuem para a compreensão da forma como as pessoas lidam com sintomas obsessivo-compulsivos, de ansiedade social e depressivos.
