Questo lavoro è un’analisi comparativa della libera circolazione delle persone nell’UE e nell’ECOWAS. La libera circolazione delle persone è considerata la libertà più fondamentale e cara garantita ai cittadini dell’UE dai Trattati. Anche i protocolli dell’ECOWAS prevedono la libera circolazione delle persone all’interno degli Stati dell’Africa occidentale. Tuttavia, nonostante l’apparente somiglianza tra l’UE e l’ECOWAS nell’obiettivo di creare un mercato comune attraverso la libera circolazione delle persone, per quanto riguarda l’ECOWAS sembra esserci un enorme divario tra la dichiarazione di questo diritto e la sua effettiva attuazione e applicazione da parte degli Stati membri dell’Africa occidentale. Il presente lavoro esamina i vari vincoli che militano contro l’effettiva mobilità delle persone all’interno della subregione dell’Africa occidentale. Mette in relazione le peculiari realtà socio-economiche della subregione con l’incapacità degli Stati membri di impegnarsi a rispettare le disposizioni dei Protocolli dell’ECOWAS sulla libera circolazione delle persone e formula raccomandazioni degne di nota.
