In deze bundel staan enkele aspecten van de vrije gemeente van J. H. Bogaard en zijn prediking. Tien preken van hem zijn opgenomen in deze bundel. Bogaard was Evangelie-dienaar te Sliedrecht van 1908 tot 1940. Bogaard was nog jong toen de Heere hem riep in de genade. Krachtig werkte de Heere met hem door tot de volle zekerheid van het geloof. Na veel beproevende omstandigheden werd hij voorganger te Sliedrecht.Zijn preken zijn heel persoonlijk en vermengd met verhalen over ontmoetingen met Gods volk. Zijn kennis aan de eeuwige Verbondsgod is de grondslag van zijn preken. Bogaard had een Bijbels kerkelijk standpunt. De Heere onderwees hem in de diepe breuk van Christus’ kerk in Nederland. Met schuldbesef over zijn eigen aandeel worstelde hij onder Gods ongenoegen en mocht met zijn kerkschuld bij het altaar des Heeren komen. Zijn schuld werd verzoend en hij kreeg geloof vanuit de Schrift dat de Kerk in ons land na diepe schuldbelijdenis eens zal terugkeren tot de God van onze vaderen.
