Cet ouvrage tente d’examiner la gravité de la violence domestique à l’encontre des femmes en Égypte à la lumière des structures patriarcales en place et de la capacité de l’État à réagir, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur le cadre institutionnel dans lequel s’inscrit la violence domestique. Le principal argument avancé est que le patriarcat a été un élément clé dans la formation ou le modelage des fondations et des institutions qui administrent ou dirigent la société, et pour que ces fondations patriarcales soient maintenues, la violence ou une menace inconsciente de violence est nécessaire à l’encontre de toute entité qui les remet en question, y compris et surtout les femmes. Ce livre se concentre principalement sur la violence entre les membres de la famille, plus précisément sur les actes de violence commis par les hommes à l’encontre des femmes en Égypte.
