L’objectif de ce livre est de comprendre la présence des modes françaises et américaines dans les tenues et les modes vestimentaires des femmes de l’élite de Fortaleza, et comment l’adoption de styles, de tendances et d’éléments vestimentaires (vêtements, chaussures, accessoires, tissus, etc.) selon des directives étrangères est en corrélation avec la culture matérielle et les processus de distinction sociale et de traduction culturelle observés à Fortaleza entre 1925 et 1947. Pour ce faire, nous analysons des publicités d’établissements commerciaux, des textes, des données officielles, des nouvelles de chroniques sociales, des appels à des concours de beauté, des illustrations et des photographies de femmes de la classe aisée qui correspondent aux lignes directrices de la mode, appartenant à un vaste corpus de documents. Tout au long de l’ouvrage, nous abordons la question de la mode et de la relation entre les individus et les vêtements au cours des années 1920, 1930, 1940 et avant. Nous étudions ici l’expérience de la mode française, nord-américaine et de Fortaleza destinée au public féminin correspondant à cette période, tout en tissant un lien entre celle-ci et l’univers des événements, à l’échelle macro, qui l’ont considérablement influencée.
