L’objectif de ce livre est d’analyser les différentes identités de l’intellectuel Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, en montrant tout d’abord sa participation à la Semaine de l’art moderne à São Paulo en 1922. Bien qu’il ait vécu à Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio est devenu l’un des grands défenseurs du modernisme de São Paulo, représentant même les revues Klaxon et Estética à Rio de Janeiro. La question se pose donc de savoir si Sérgio était un moderniste de Rio ou de São Paulo. L’article montre comment le projet entrepris par les élites de São Paulo a réussi à faire de São Paulo le repère fondateur du mouvement moderniste brésilien. Enfin, cet article analyse comment, à partir des années 1950, lorsqu’il rejoint le corps enseignant de l’USP, Sérgio Buarque devient très proche des Annales et se crée une identité ususpienne. Il a abordé des thèmes tels que l’histoire des mentalités, la culture matérielle et l’interdisciplinarité dans des ouvrages tels que Visão do Paraíso et Caminhos e Fronteiras. Nous pouvons constater un changement significatif dans le jeu des identités analysé par Stuart Hall, où le sujet postmoderne est fragmenté, sans identité fixe. Ainsi, Sérgio se rapproche de l’historiographie française des Annales.
