Les Provinciales, or ’Provincial Letters,’ are a series of eighteen letters written by Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte, and Pierre Nicole. These letters, originally published between 1656 and 1657, are a crucial work in French literature and a significant philosophical and theological text. Written during the Jansenist controversy, the letters critique the moral theology of the Jesuits and defend the Jansenist perspective. Pascal’s sharp wit, rhetorical skill, and clear prose make these letters not only persuasive arguments but also a literary masterpiece. This edition includes notes by G. Wendrock and is translated by F.M. de Joncoux. Les Provinciales remain relevant for their insights into ethics, power, and religious debate, offering a compelling glimpse into 17th-century intellectual life. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
