Les Provinciales, or Lettres de Louis de Montalte, by Blaise Pascal, are a series of eighteen letters published in 1656 and 1657. These letters, written under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte, constitute a defense of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld against the Jesuit theologians within the University of Paris. Pascal masterfully employs wit and rhetorical skill to critique the moral theology of the Jesuits, particularly their doctrine of probabilism, which he argues leads to moral laxity. The letters offer a sharp and satirical commentary on the theological and political debates of Pascal’s time and provide insight into the intellectual climate of 17th-century France.
