La culture façonne l’expression et la compréhension des troubles psychologiques et joue un rôle dans l’émergence de syndromes spécifiques à la culture. En particulier, certaines cultures approuvent les croyances en sorcellerie, en sorts et en esprits, qui relèvent du concept de 'folklore'. Les croyances folkloriques comme la sorcellerie et la possession d’esprit et leur impact supposé sur la manifestation des troubles psychologiques persistent aujourd’hui. Il devient donc évident que ces aspects culturels auront un impact sur la façon dont les troubles psychologiques sont vécus et traités dans les différentes communautés. Si l’on veut comprendre efficacement les différentes communautés, il est impératif d’explorer l’impact que les croyances spirituelles ont sur la perception des perturbations psychologiques par les membres de la communauté. En se concentrant sur les croyances folkloriques des membres des communautés musulmane et hindoue d’Afrique du Sud, cette étude vise à promouvoir une compréhension plus approfondie de l’impact que ces croyances ont sur les perceptions des troubles psychologiques.
