La prégnance de la pensée passionnelle qui accapare l'attention et obnubile l'esprit ne s'explique donc pas pour lui "psychiquement" mais en tant qu'effet du corps, effet "neurophysiologique", dirions-nous aujourd'hui. Le propos général du traité Les Passions de l'âme, publié en 1649, est de réhabiliter les passions contre la tradition stoïcienne qui y voit un obstacle au bonheur et à la liberté.
