Pris en charge par les services de la DDASS alors qu’il n’a que 8 ans à la mort de sa mère en 1960, un jeune garçon est envoyé dans un foyer d’accueil dans les Hauts de La Réunion. Le coin est perdu. Le pensionnat est une maison de redressement. Avec d’autres enfants, il y subira une double peine : la maltraitance au sein de la pension et les insultes des gens de la bourgade qui ne tolèrent pas leur présence dans le village et les traitent de délinquants et de sauvages. Que vais-je devenir ? Cette question est au centre de sa vie. Quatre années plus tard, en compagnie de vingt-quatre mineurs, le garçon intègre l’orphelinat Saint-Jean à Albi dans le Tarn. Il côtoie des orphelins métropolitains chez qui la misère morale est le quotidien également. Les religieuses assureront la reconstruction de ces enfants profondément bouleversés par leur expatriation mais leur langue natale, le créole, leur sera interdite par les prêtres.
