English description: In The Origins of Alchemy, renowned French chemist and historian of science Marcellin Berthelot investigates the historical, philosophical, and mystical foundations of alchemy.Drawing on ancient manuscripts, Egyptian inscriptions, and early alchemical texts, Berthelot explores the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, Zosimos, and other early thinkers. He demonstrates how ancient metallurgical practices, Greek speculative philosophy, and Alexandrian mysticism converged to shape what would eventually evolve into modern chemistry.Blending rigorous historical analysis with intellectual inquiry, this classic work remains essential for readers interested in the history of science, esoteric traditions, and the development of chemical knowledge.
