William Stern (1871-1938) est un psychologue et philosophe allemand connu surtout aujourd’hui pour s’être intéressé de très près à la question de l’intelligence, après la mort prématurée d’Alfred Binet (1857-1911). C’est à l’occasion d’une conférence qu’il a eu l’honneur de présenter en avril 1912 au Congrès de psychologie de Berlin qu’est né un long texte où il définit l’intelligence comme une  capacité mentale générale d’adaptation à de nouvelles tâches et conditions de vie et où est présentée la fameuse notion de QI dont il est sans conteste l’inventeur. Ayant entrepris la révision des tests Binet-Simon, il a néanmoins toujours souligné le danger des interprétations imprudentes des valeurs du QI et a insisté sur le fait qu’aucun test ne peut être considéré en soi comme un moyen d’évaluation de la finesse de l’intelligence.La traduction française de son ouvrage de 1912 constitue une opportunité de réhabilitation de son œuvre dans le champ de la psychologie différentielle.
