Le narrateur, médecin parisien est appelé par son confrère et ancien camarade qui réside à Ardentes, un petit village du bord de l’Indre. Il s’adjoint la compagnie de deux de ses amis, dilettantes aisés, un historien et un peintre. Il vient d’y avoir tentative de meurtre sur le propriétaire d’un domaine voisin qui en est resté paralysé. Sa femme est devenue délirante et leur fils a été poignardé le jour suivant dans le jardin. Un fantôme blanc a été vu dans les parages et les habitants superstitieux se cloîtrent chez eux. Avec l’aide de la fille de cette famille, et d’un journaliste, le petit groupe va remonter aux sources des événements.
