Un parlement décrié par sa vénalité touchait à sa fin, le moment d'élire le nouveau approchait ; sur lui reposaient toutes mes espérances. Il s'agissait de pénétrer les électeurs de la Grande-Bretagne, de la nécessité de faire tomber leur choix sur des hommes éclairés et vertueux ; le seul moyen praticable était de réveiller les Anglais de leur léthargie, de leur peindre les avantages inestimables de la liberté, les maux effroyables du despotisme, les scènes d'épouvante et d'effroi de la tyrannie ; en un mot, de faire passer dans leur âme le feu sacré qui dévorait la mienne. C'était le but de mon ouvrage. Ouvrage destiné à développer les noirs attentats des princes contre les peuples ; les ressorts secrets, les ruses, les menées, les artifices, les coups d'état qu'ils emploient pour détruire la liberté, et les scènes sanglantes qui accompagnent le despotisme.
