My fifth disappointment stemmed from the way the young women dressed here. Despite the bone-chilling cold, they would arrive in the classroom barely clothed. This was deviant behavior that not even the instructors attempted to reprimand-citing the freedom to do as one pleased with one’s own body-even though it constituted a violation of public decency, a criminal offense. I was shocked that even the law students, who ought to have set an example, were the worst offenders in this regard. The young women took pleasure in publicly exposing their private parts, reasoning that 'a shop only makes sales when it is open.' I did not care to find out exactly what that meant. However, if I ever found myself sitting next to a woman engaging in such exhibitionism-letting her underwear show-I would be unable to continue following the lesson, as the sight would make me feel nauseous. My mother had taught us to be decent and to take care of our appearance; I found such deviant behavior abhorrent.

    Stuart Evans
Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
