Hace ahora más de cincuenta años que este libro se publicó por primera vez. Aunque re editado en 1972 y 1976, lleva años agotado. Fue una respuesta a Monty Johnstone, en aquel entonces un importante teórico del Partido Comunista de Gran Bretaña (CPGB), que en octubre de 1968 publicó una revisión de la figura de León Trotsky en Cogito, el periódico de la Liga Juvenil Comunista (YCL), las juventudes del CPGB. Alan Woods y Ted Grant aprovecharon aquella oportunidad para, en una detallada respuesta, explicar la verdadera relación entre las ideas de Lenin y las de Trotsky, falsificada sistemáticamente por los estalinistas desde que inventaron el “trotskismo” en 1924. Pero este libro no fue un ejercicio académico, sino un llamamiento político a las bases del CPGB y la YCL a descubrir la verdad sobre Trotsky y regresar al programa revolucionario de Lenin. 10
