O principal objetivo deste livro é fornecer uma visão sobre a natureza da filosofia da mente, não só como um ramo da filosofia enquanto disciplina académica, mas, mais importante ainda, como um aspeto do esforço humano (intelectual) geral para adquirir conhecimento auto-reflexivo. Ou seja, o conhecimento da pessoa humana em relação ao ambiente em que as suas actividades têm lugar. Uma das razões para fazer isto é abordar, embora indiretamente, uma das questões mais actuais e fundamentais da filosofia - o problema mente-corpo. Considerado um dos temas filosóficos mais antigos, a questão mente-corpo consiste em saber como explicar o tipo de relação que a mente de um indivíduo tem com o mundo físico e, em particular, com o corpo. Os discursos sobre a mente e o corpo estão repletos nos escritos de filósofos e académicos antigos.
