In Leila, Charles’s Daughter, dictated by the spirit Arnold de Numiers to medium Denise Corrêa de Macedo, the narrative uncovers a previously untold past incarnation of the renowned Brazilian medium, Yvonne A. Pereira. Reborn in 19th-century Spain as Leila, the daughter of the wealthy and philanthropic Count Carlos Ramiro and Countess Constância, she grows up surrounded by luxury and develops into an exceptionally talented pianist. Despite her father’s devoted efforts to instill Spiritist values and charity in her heart, Leila remains proud, headstrong, and captivated by social soirées and romantic illusions. At fifteen, she marries Roberto de Canallejas, a dedicated doctor and the reincarnation of a spirit bound to her by centuries of tragic love. They have a daughter named Lelita, but Leila soon feels suffocated by domestic life, desperately missing the public applause and artistic recognition she craves. Seduced by the manipulative Count of Saint-Patrice, Marco de Villiers, who promises her fame playing in an orchestra, Leila abandons her husband and child to tour Europe. The adventure quickly turns hollow when she realizes she does not love Marco, but her overwhelming pride prevents her from returning home to beg for forgiveness.Tragedy strikes in her absence: brokenhearted and severely depressed, Roberto accidentally infects himself and little Lelita with tuberculosis, and both perish. A devastated Leila returns to her father in Lisbon, consumed by guilt. Targeted by the dark spiritual obsession of Miguel García-a vengeful former servant-and shattered by a cruel, condemning letter from her own mother, Leila succumbs to despair and throws herself into the Tagus River. After enduring ten agonizing years in the dark Valley of the Suicides, Leila is finally rescued by the spiritual realm, aided by the unceasing prayers and piano playing of her devoted father. In the Maria de Nazareth Hospital, her next incarnation is meticulously planned to cure her pride and selfishness: she will be reborn in Brazil as Yvonne A. Pereira, facing a life of poverty, hardship, and ostensible mediumship. Through strict discipline, charity, and the psychography of renowned Spiritist works, she eventually achieves her sublime spiritual redemption.
