For Eli, living authentically was a hard-won victory. Growing up in Salt Lake City, Eli experienced a profound tragedy at age nine when his grandfather was murdered for being gay, instilling a lifelong fear of meeting a similar fate. Having survived a lifetime of suppressed identity, family rejection, and societal discrimination, he finally found his oasis. In 2023, his life was upended when a neighbor in his Las Vegas apartment complex began targeting him with severe harassment. The hostility quickly escalated from late-night disturbances and homophobic slurs to physical violence. He collected the evidence and begged police for help, but those in positions of power chose to look the other way, leaving Eli feeling as though his only course of action was to run. Upon moving out of the complex, the situation took a bizarre turn: the neighbor assumed Eli’s absence meant he had been killed by the state’s governor, and launched a secondary campaign of harassment against the governor and his family in an effort to avenge Eli’s 'murder.'
