Cuando Jaime Concha estudia la narrativa chilena compone acordes complejos en los que resuenan simultáneamente varios estratos culturales. Su escritura tersa, ajustada y erudita es por cierto uno de los más lúcidos trabajos de interpretación literaria que se han escrito en Chile, pero también debiéramos leerla en su hondura, porque ella misma es un producto sobredeterminado cuyas capas de sentido vamos penetrando solo paulatinamente. Su trabajo resume y contiene una posición meditada sobre la historia latinoamericana y sobre la literatura y las ideas de occidente, e introduce la presencia opinante, políticamente localizada del sujeto histórico. Es difícil que una literatura no siga, para bien y para mal, el destino del universo que la produce. El siglo y medio de ficciones que estudia Leer a contraluz es una selección de triunfos frágiles, es decir, una antología de las pocas batallas que la letra ha ganado en una guerra en la que, a la larga, siempre termina imponiéndose la historia.
