L’expression 'économie sociale' a été utilisée pour la première fois par les économistes du XIXe siècle, à une époque où le mouvement coopératif commençait à se développer en Europe. Aujourd’hui, elle est définie comme un ensemble d’entreprises sociales dont l’objectif premier est social. Certaines questions se posent : la signification du terme 'économie sociale' que nous utilisons aujourd’hui est-elle la même que celle employée il y a deux siècles ou sommes-nous en train de promouvoir une économie néo-sociale ayant des règles et des caractéristiques différentes ? L’économie sociale s’est-elle limitée, dès sa naissance, à une somme d’organisations ou est-elle née comme un concept plus large dont les principes ont inspiré certains types d’entreprises sans être épuisés par elles. Quelles sont les caractéristiques qui rendent l’Economie Sociale efficace dans la lutte contre la pauvreté et l’exclusion sociale aujourd’hui ? Le présent ouvrage tentera de répondre à ces questions en invitant le lecteur à un bref voyage dans le temps, à l’époque où des penseurs tels que Charles Dunoyer, Frédéric Le Play, John Stuart Mill, Léon Walras, Robert Owen et Charles Fourier cherchaient également des réponses.
