Perchè quando si parla di 'civiltà' s’intende quasi sempre la civiltà europea? Perchè l’Europa ha saputo conquistare grandi e antiche civiltà senza quasi venirne influenzata? Questo breve studio cerca di rispondere a queste annose domande senza ricorrere a insostenibili concetti di 'superiorità' o 'missione storica', ma attraverso l’analisi di quegli elementi antropologici, culturali ed economici, che sommandosi in modo dapprima forse casuale, poi sempre più consequenziale, sono venuti a costituire una sorta di 'eccezione' nel contesto delle altre civiltà, fornendo agli Europei risorse tecniche e psicologiche altrove poco o per nulla presenti. Ciò non garantisce agli Europei alcuna patente di eccellenza, anzi dev’essere motivo di autocritica e di responsabilità verso gli altri popoli. Come strumento didattico, lo scritto esemplifica un modo di trarre profitto dalle nozioni storiche per affrontare un problema attuale.
