Learning to read is a complex task for adult secondlanguage (L2) learners. In particular, readingnon-alphabetic script can be a serious challenge forthose with alphabetic backgrounds. While there arecross-linguistic effects, research suggests theexistence of processes independent of such effects:readers develop L2-specific word recognition skillsthrough building knowledge of L2 orthographicfeatures. This book discusses development of L2script-specific recognition ability amongEnglish-speaking learners of Japanese. By analysingresults of behavioural tests and a verbal protocoladministered to L2 readers of Japanese, the studyinvestigated changes in developing L2 learners’ kanjirecognition skills and their awareness of structureand function of characters at different stages of L2exposure. By identifying several critical skills andawareness through analysing the results, the bookfurther discusses the possibility of enhancingcharacter recognition ability with use of explicitinstruction at critical points. The book should beuseful both to researchers and teachers who deal withsecond language acquisition, and those interested inlearning character-based languages.
