Les premières codifications du droit consignées dans la civilisation reconnaissent l’importance du droit dans nos systèmes humains. Noé a enjoint à ses fils d’observer la justice, de couvrir la honte de leur chair, de bénir leur Créateur, d’honorer leur père et leur mère et de s’abstenir de l’iniquité et de l’impureté. Ces principes ont ensuite été affinés sous la forme que nous leur connaissons, les dix commandements. L’existence même de l’homme dépendait de son obéissance à la loi de Dieu. La tradition soutient que cette loi a été formulée comme une reconnaissance verbale de l’alliance entre Dieu et son peuple. Elle impliquait une contrepartie de la part des deux parties et constituait donc un contrat légal et contraignant selon les principes établis de la loi. Cependant, cette alliance n’englobait pas toute la population connue du monde, mais seulement le groupe connu sous le nom de Peuple de Dieu, le Peuple d’Israël. Comme le raconte la Genèse, le premier livre de la Bible, l’homme, c’est-à-dire Adam, avait le teint rougeaud. Cette rougeur était le rappel conscient de son engagement à respecter la loi de Dieu. Chaque fois qu’il transgressait cette loi, il rougissait, en reconnaissance consciente de sa désobéissance. Le sang lui montait au visage, dans un rougissement visible, comme la marque de sa désobéissance et le rappel qu’il devait accomplir la loi.
