L’ouvrage vise à offrir une reconstitution des écoles théologiques de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, jusqu’à la veille du Concile Vatican II. Ces mouvements étaient contre la vision de l’Église catholique sur l’approche de la théologie. Ils ont réagi contre l’hégémonie de la théologie scolastique qui influençait les manuels théologiques. La théologie s’inspire de la méthodes des sciences humaines et sociales. Les dogmes passent au tamis de la raison. Le Concile, va être un tournant très important : dans sa réforme, il choisit une nouvelle approche et une nouvelle méthode. Les concepts de la théologie deviennent universels. L’Église catholique, qui jusque là s’intéressait à la préservation de la doctrine et tenait une distance par rapport aux développements culturels et aux questions sociales contemporaines, va s’ouvrir. Ainsi toutes les différentes disciplines ou branches vont connaître un renouvellement interne.
