Il y a cinquante ans, la génétique cardiovasculaire n’existait tout simplement pas. La génétique était un domaine naissant de la recherche fondamentale, sans grande pertinence apparente pour la science cardiovasculaire ou toute autre sous-spécialité médicale. Aujourd’hui, la génétique cardiovasculaire est une discipline qui intègre pleinement la recherche en laboratoire de haute technologie et la médecine clinique. De cet hybride sont nées des découvertes qui ont permis d’identifier avec précision la cause de troubles jusqu’alors 'idiopathiques', de fournir des informations fondamentales sur les processus pathologiques et de délimiter des sous-types dans des pathologies bien définies. Ces découvertes déracinent les classifications anatomiques traditionnelles des maladies et intègrent la physiologie cellulaire et la biochimie moléculaire dans l’étude de la pathologie. Pour les chercheurs, les praticiens et les patients, la génétique cardiovasculaire a un impact croissant sur la définition et le diagnostic de la maladie, l’explication du pronostic et l’expansion des traitements. Les maladies cardiovasculaires (MCV) constituent un problème de santé majeur, affectant plus de 80 000 000 de personnes rien qu’aux États-Unis. Les MCV englobent un large éventail de troubles, notamment des maladies du système vasculaire, du myocarde, le circuit électrique du cœur.
