L’objectif de cet article est d’expliquer le processus d’individualisation tel qu’il est décrit par Gilles Lipovetsky dans son ouvrage L’Empire de l’éphémère (1987). Ce processus, qui marque un changement de comportement social, se poursuit et se prolonge depuis la fin du XIVe siècle et s’est répandu dans la société à la fin du XXe siècle grâce au nouveau culte de l’éphémère et au monde de la mode. Le philosophe français Gilles Lipovetsky se présente comme un éloge des valeurs du monde de la mode, exposant sa thèse sur la façon dont la mode a pu remodeler la société occidentale à son image et comment elle a donné naissance à des valeurs de tolérance, de raffinement du goût et de pacification entre les hommes, transformant ainsi un monde de société violente en un monde de plus en plus pacifique et adepte de nouvelles valeurs typiquement modernes.
