Lo spaccato di una tranquilla cittadina statunitense visto dagli occhi di Kate, uno sguardo di sofferenza che rispecchia quello dei suoi protagonisti, e che mette a fuoco timori reconditi, pregiudizi e segreti, coi quali, emersi come incubi, ciascuno deve fare i conti. Una 'terribile normalità' del territorio fa da contrappeso alla spaventosa soluzione che sta dietro a questo romanzo criminale.
