L’obiettivo di questo libro è fornire una panoramica dello sviluppo e delle implicazioni delle nanotecnologie nella fotocatalisi. Gli argomenti trattati includono uno sguardo dettagliato alle proprietà uniche delle nanoparticelle e alla loro relazione con le proprietà fotocatalitiche. Sono state esaminate anche le attuali applicazioni e ricerche sull’uso delle nanoparticelle come fotocatalizzatori. È stato inoltre trattato l’utilizzo delle nanoparticelle per migliorare le proprietà fotocatalitiche e/o ottiche dei materiali semiconduttori comunemente utilizzati. La fotocatalisi eterogenea dei semiconduttori ha un enorme potenziale per il trattamento dei contaminanti organici nell’acqua e nell’aria. Questo processo è noto come processo di ossidazione avanzata (AOP) ed è adatto all’ossidazione di un’ampia gamma di composti organici. Tra le AOP, la fotocatalisi eterogenea si è dimostrata interessante per la sua efficienza nel degradare i composti organici recalcitranti. Diversi semiconduttori (TiO2, ZnO, Fe2O3, CdS, ZnS) possono agire come fotocatalizzatori, ma il TiO2 è stato più comunemente studiato per la sua capacità di degradare gli inquinanti organici e persino di ottenere una completa mineralizzazione.
