Ce livre vise à exposer la relation entre la vie et la mort dans To the Lighthouse , de Virginia Woolf. Cette structure conflictuelle est mise en évidence par les effets provoqués par le travail avec la voix narrative, le temps et l’intertextualité. L’auteure, qui appartient au modernisme anglais dans sa phase initiale, souligne l’importance de ce qui n’est pas seulement appréhendé par les apparences. Pour cela, elle utilise les techniques du flux de conscience, en particulier le monologue intérieur indirect, pour enregistrer la peur de la mort et l’angoisse de l’existence, tensions responsables des grandes révélations de To the Lighthouse, présentées au lecteur à travers le travail sur les souvenirs et les réflexions. Ainsi, le roman suit le parcours de la mémoire des personnages, reflété dans l’absence de linéarité temporelle. Le travail sur l’intertextualité contribue à souligner le retour à la mémoire, car les intertextes, issus d’époques et de genres littéraires différents, composent les échos de la tradition littéraire, élargissant et enrichissant considérablement le sens du roman.
