Les romanciers de l’époque victorienne semblent avoir été préoccupés par les relations sociales. En outre, l’époque victorienne conserve de nombreux éléments romantiques. Certains de ces éléments se retrouvent dans le conflit entre le sentiment religieux et l’esprit scientifique, entre le mysticisme et le rationalisme.
