Très rares sont les écrits issus de sources africaines antérieures à la colonisation. c’est dire le caractère exceptionnel du Grand livre des Lawson, qui réunit plus de 700 documents, en anglais, recopiés à partir des années 1840 . Il appartient à une famille togolaise dont l’histoire est liée à toute la région. En voici enfin la traduction en français. Ces documents regroupés dans ce premier volume sont essentiellement des correspondances commerciales entre les Lawson, et leurs partenaires sur la cote africaine et en Grande-Bretagne, de 1842 à 1853. On découvre un comptoir qui vit de l’exportation d’huile de palme.
