Le drame, genre essentiellement mixte favorisant un pêle-mêle de tons, de registres et de situations, va largement définir la première moitié du XIXᵉ siècle, siècle de tourments de toutes sortes. Manifestes, préfaces et correspondances vont être en faveur de la diffusion de nouveaux concepts, et, entre romantiques et antiromantiques, la scène littéraire et surtout théâtrale s’anime voire s’enflamme, mettant en (en)jeu l’authenticité du nouveau genre. Nourris d’une esthétique baroque et irrégulière, les chantres de ce mouvement font l’éloge des représentants d’une littérature préclassique et anticlassique et chantent le romantisme étranger : allemand et anglais. Ces influences justifient la fantaisie romantique qui alimentera la curiosité des dramaturges de la fin du siècle et de l’Anti- Théâtre. Entre des penchants baroques et des aspirations absurdes, le drame romantique se construit une identité, un destin.
