Le gallicanisme, doctrine particulière à l’Eglise de France depuis des siècles, n’a pas disparu avec la Révolution comme on le croit souvent. A partir du Concordat de 1801, il concerne encore une grande partie de l’épiscopat, qui se trouve tantôt complice, tantôt antagoniste du gallicanisme parlementaire des gouvernements. Les doctrines ultramontaines se développent spectaculairement à partir de 1830 et font reculer l’emprise du gallicanisme sur le clergé. Dans une démarche volontariste et offensive, le Saint-Siège promeut une conception centralisée et autoritaire de l’Eglise et cherche à annihiler les particularismes locaux. Ses pressions sur l’épiscopat ramènent peu à peu le gallicanisme traditionnel à une idée minoritaire et subversive. En 1870, le concile de Vatican marque la fin d’une ère dans l’Eglise de France. En citant les témoins de l’époque, en recréant leur état d’esprit, il s’agit de mettre en lumière l’histoire du déclin du gallicanisme et, plus encore, l’histoire des mentalités catholiques.
