La Guinée-Bissau et le Cap-Vert sont deux pays qui ont été colonisés par le même pays, le Portugal, et qui sont géographiquement proches. Cette étude vise à comprendre la période coloniale moderne en Guinée et au Cap-Vert 1885-1973/75, à travers une analyse comparative du statut juridique des habitants (Estatuto dos Indígenas), de la législation du travail, de la politique fiscale (imposto de palhota), de l’administration et de la politique éducative. Le Portugal a agi de différentes manières, favorisant toujours l’une des colonies en lui donnant accès à une éducation de qualité, en lui permettant d’acquérir une formation qui lui a permis d’occuper une position privilégiée dans l’administration et la politique, sans toutefois cesser de l’opprimer et de l’exploiter de manière inhumaine, et à d’autres moments, il a construit une séparation dans la société guinéenne par le biais de sa législation. Après la séparation administrative, le Cap-Vert a été plongé dans une profonde crise de la faim et a été presque complètement abandonné par les Portugais.
